Pride Month: Writer Spotlight

Our first author for Pride 2021 is O’Jay Barr! O’Jay Barr is a lesbian romance writer who has released her second book (and sequel) today, on the first day of pride!

Represent Publishing decided to do a quick interview with O’Jay Barr to get to know her better!

Question and Answer:

  1. What’s your name and genre? (Pen name is good if that’s what you write under.)

O’Jay Barr – Lesbian, romantic drama

  1. What are some fun facts about you?

I am the first in my family of 20+ grandkids to graduate from college (with both a grad and an undergrad degree in Child Advocacy and Policy). I am considering going back to school for my doctorate in law. I attended a performing arts school for dance and acting until 11th grade.

3. Tell me about your books.

When was it released? My 1st book was released on June 9th last year. There is a revised new release of that book, and my latest book, on June 1st, 2021.

What are they called? The two books are part of a series called The Other Side. The 1st book is called The Other Side: Secrets and the 2nd book is called The Other Side: Reveal.

What are the books about? The series follows twin sisters and their dating lives within the lesbian community.  The 1st book is primarily about Samantha, who is newly questioning her sexuality although she’s been in a long-term relationship with a man.  The 2nd book explores DV and threesomes, plus we get to see more of everyone else’s relationships. All in all, the series is a fun and drama-filled look into their lives with some hot sex scenes thrown in!

How did you publish, and why did you choose to publish that way?

The 1st time I self-published through Amazon KDP.  The second time around I am self-publishing through my own publishing company – Above the Barr Publishing, LLC.  I am distributing through my website as well as through other major sites such as Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc.  I chose to change things up the second time so that I could have more control of my earnings and become more visible in some of the smaller bookstores.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

RESEARCH AND MARKET! Someone just recently reminded me that you don’t know what you don’t know, and that is so true when it comes to writing and publishing.  While I am so much more knowledgeable this second time around than I was last year, there is still so much more to learn.  I discovered that while there is a lot that I can do myself to save money but there are times when you have to spend money to do things the right way.
