Hey friends! The entire month of June, we’ll be featuring LGBTQIAP+ authors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Send them some love, check out their books, and let us know what you think! Enjoy!
Introduce yourself! What’s your name? Genre you write? Fun fact(s) about yourself?
Hi there! I’m Rebecca but you can call me Becca. I’m a queer Canadian author based in Toronto and my pronouns are she/her. I write queer romance with a focus on lesbian love stories. My favourite things to do besides writing are singing, making jewelry, and spending time with my beautiful fiancée Liz and our three cats.
How did you start writing?
Looking back at my childhood notebooks, it’s clear I’ve been writing stories since I was little. I always wanted to be an author but I never thought it would actually happen. Then one day I decided “why not?” and went for it by getting in touch with Bold Strokes Books. Finally I found a use for that BA in English! And the rest is history!
What is your writing process like?
If I’m being honest, my writing process is an absolute mess. I like to write whatever scenes inspire me most, then double back and bridge them all together. I’m also pretty scattered as far as when and where I write too. Whenever inspiration strikes, whether it be on the train or as I’m falling asleep, I’ll be writing things down.
What inspired you to write Hot Keys? What is it about?
I’ve always been fascinated with the decade of the 1920s. The glamour, the speakeasies, and the fashion captivated me, and reading about the queer culture that existed during the time period made my little lesbian heart sing. After conversations with a friend about queer flappers and gangsters, I started writing.
And thus, Hot Keys was born. It’s a story about Prohibition, about being gay and trying to find your place in the world, set amidst the glamour and danger of working at a speakeasy. In the novel, two best friends move to New York to become musicians and end up involved in a speakeasy where crime runs rampant. And it’s about lust, and love, and finding your way in the world, through hardships and through joyful moments.
Hot Keys is available for preorder! Where can readers find this, and when will it be released?
Hot Keys will be out in ebook and paperback format on November 1st on the Bold Strokes Books website at tinyurl.com/hotkeysnovel and will be released on Amazon and everywhere else on November 15th. You can preorder the ebook on the Bold Strokes Books website.
Do you have any other books published/are you working on anything new?
Hot Keys is my first novel! I’m currently working on another novel which is in the very beginning stages. It’s a fantasy romance with a humourous twist, and I’m really excited to get working on it more now that Hot Keys is almost out!
Do any authors influence your writing?
I’ve always been a voracious reader, and many different writers have influenced me over the years. My favourite authors growing up were Jonathan Stroud, Neil Gaiman, and Christopher Moore. I think they have influenced my desire to write stories with humour and ones that focus on potentially dark topics with a bit of light.
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
Just put it on the page. It doesn’t have to be pretty. It doesn’t have to be polished. It just has to exist. There will be time to fix it up later, so just write what you can and get it started!
